Food Revolution, Dancing Chickens & Ancient Grains

It's Dance Like a Chicken Day!  What will people think of next? Seriously, though, you will dance like a chicken when you come to My Manakin Market!   You'll find LOTS of fresh seasonal produce, fresh and dried herbs, berries, pastured poultry, lamb, beef, pork, goat meat, seafood, sausages, seafood, goat's cheese, cereal, baked goods, cheeselocal wines, honey, candy, artisan crafts, candles, soaps, fiber products, perennials & shrubs, and MORE!  Come grab some food and sit a spell under the shade while you chow down in-between shopping spurts!  COME HUNGRY - we will have HOT, ready to eat prepared foods, courtesy of Real Country Sausage.  Sorry - no wine tastings this week.  Visit the Rassawek Spring Jubilee to see Grayhaven Winery and experience one of Virginia's most unique wine and heritage festivals this Saturday AND Sunday!

RVA FOOD REVOLUTION
Check it out!
Food Revolution Day is the culmination of Jamie Oliver's campaign to get people better connected to their food.  On Friday, May 17th, communities across the world will come together and celebrate the beautiful diversity of fresh food, sharing cooking skills, understanding good eating habits and, of course, eating great grub.  This year, Edible Education is taking the lead by coordinating RVA Food Revolution!  What are you going to do to get better connected to YOUR food?  Leave comments on ChiknEGG's blog or Facebook page and share your commitment to the food revolution movement!

CHEF'S DEMO

In honor of RVA Food Revolution Day, we are pleased to have Tina Shiver, MS of Lighten Up provide us with a chef's demo!  Tina will be mixing quinoa (pronounced "Qin-wah"), an ancient grain, with fresh veggies from the market to create a beautiful, healthy and easy-to-prepare dish.  Tina is a Registered Dietician who holds a Masters of Science and Nutrition from James Madison University. Her practice uses a Functional Medicine approach, focusing on using nutrition to improve the overall health and quality of life for the whole person. She has been in private practice in Richmond, Virginia for 15 years, working with individuals to develop nutritional plans designed for their specific needs.  ChiknEGG's Lisa Dearden has been working with Tina for years and has seen significant health changes due to the individual guidance and advice she has received using Tina's unique functional food approach.  To find out more about Tina Shiver, visit her website or Facebook page.  Don't forget to post your salad recipes in honor of National Salad Month on ChiknEGG's webpage - your picture and recipes may be included in our upcoming cookbook!

MUSIC AT THE MARKET

Listen Online NOW!
Andrew Rohlk’s (rhymes with folk) is a singer/songwriter who writes songs from a place of thoughtful reflection.  His Introspective Power-Pop sound is rooted in genre titles like indie rock, indie pop, indie pop rock, alternative rock, alternative indie pop rock...you get the idea.  While not all his songs are directly about him, they come through his subjective perspective and inevitably have his own spin built in.  That's where the introspective bit comes from.  We know you will LOVE Andrew's unique sound and appreciate his extraordinary talent and energy.

Andrew is squeezing us in on Saturday before work and has to leave before the market ends, so our friends Robyne and Mary Burdgman of g2v (from last week's "rain" market) are coming back and will be "plugged in" this time so everyone can hear them perform.  With hints of Neil Young, REM, XTC and traces of punk and metal flavoring their songs, g2v presents a catchy, eclectic sound that captivates the listener with every note.  You can learn more about Andrew, listen to his music and contact him for bookings by visiting his website.  To book g2g, email them!  If you know of a band or solo artist who would like to play at the market, please email us or call us @ 804-314-9141.

GLEANING PROGRAM
Proud USDA SNAP Participant!
We are excited to announce our new Gleaning Program this year!  Our good friends at the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services will be picking up food products that vendors may end up discarding at the end of each market day.  In addition, customers will have the opportunity to purchase products for the GFCFS's Food Pantry for donation to needy families.  If customers have other items that they would like to contribute to the GFCFS's Food Pantry, click on the preceding link and view a list of needed items.  We will be collecting these items weekly at the ChiknEGG booth.  And don't forget, we accept SNAP (formerly know as food stamps)!  Tell your friends!  We had quite a lot of fresh produce and baked goods for donation our first week..Thank you!
