My Manakin Market Week of May 21st, 2011

My Manakin Market - May 21st, 2011.

Despite last week’s drizzly weather, we still had a big turn-out for our second week of the season! This Saturday looks like another picture perfect day, with lots of sunshine and warm 80 degree weather.  After being cooped up all week, I'm sure we'll be packed with folks looking for something fun to do outdoors.  Why not enjoy the beautiful sunshine surrounded by your local farmers and artisans while listening to some great live music?!!

This week, we will have an incredible selection of wonderful fresh produce. Look for onions, lettuce, kale, Swiss chard, beets, kohlrabi, spinach, fresh & potted herbs and STRAWBERRIES! We have a great selection of meats, including grass-fed beef, pastured pork, lamb & poultry, fresh caught seafood, crabs and shrimp (including cooked spiced shrimp)! We’ll have cheese this week from Marshall Farms Natural Cheese – come and try a sample! Our selection of baked goods includes breads, muffins, pies, foccacia, and GLUTEN FREE products. We will also have honey, candy, homemade spices and lots of other delicious Virginia Grown items available at My Manakin Market! Check out What's In Season!

We have Aquatic Plants!
We will also have a huge selection of plants, including indoor exotic plants, bedding plants, hanging baskets, aquatic plants, vegetable starts, herbs, annuals and perennials. My Manakin Market has some wonderful artisan crafters, too, so make sure to keep your eyes open for great gifts throughout the season – look for handmade clothing, jewelry, hand-carved wooden objects, wreaths, bedspreads, fiber products, soaps, knitted/crocheted items and more. And don’t forget to check out ChiknEGG’s Systern Rain Barrels and Earth Machine Composters! William Hale with All Farm Organics will be hanging out near the ChiknEGG booth with his awesome organic compost and popcorn seeds. Come chat with him about your compost needs…

This week’s music will be provided by Pamela McCarthy. Pamela has been entertaining folks at farmers markets throughout Central Virginia for years.  She has a beautiful voice and sings classic Indie and Folk music while strumming her acoustic guitar.  She is has been singing since 5, writing poetry since 8, playing guitar since 12, and composing songs since 13. Born to sing and play!

We are open for business every Saturday from 8:00am - Noon, May through October. With 45 vendors (view our Complete List of Vendors), My Manakin Market promises to bring the highest quality Virginia Grown products to Central Virginia!

Check out our cool interactive Market Map to find your favorite vendor(s), or launch a Product Search to find your favorite products!

We have live music every week, cooking demonstrations, chef's demos and lots of other fun activities for the whole family. ChiknEGG’s intern, Michele Wright (aka The Local Agrarian) will be manning (or womanning?) the Nadolski’s booth this week. Michele coordinates the market’s musical entertainment, chef’s demos and does cooking demonstrations every other week. Visit her tent to see what’s cookin’!

We're also offering wine tastings from two local wineries, Grayhaven and WindSong. Come grab a glass of Sangria or wine and hang-out in the wine corral with a bar-b-q sandwich from Cub Creek Farms!

Speaking of wine, why not spend some time at the market and then head on out to the Rassawek Vineyard Spring Jubilee and Heritage Wine Festival?  This is a GREAT family event on an absolutely stunning property.  Tickets are on sale now on the Goochland Chamber of Commerce website, or you may purchase them at the gate.
A new event is debuting in Goochland! The Rassawek Spring Jubilee is a two-day celebration that will showcase the cultural, musical, agrarian and artistic traditions that are the heart and heritage of Goochland County. The Rasaswek Spring Jubilee will feature a variety of activities and demonstrations designed to connect Goochland's unique rustic past with its current crafts, talents and commerce.

The Rassawek Spring Jubilee will take place on May 21 and 22 and will feature a jam-packed music stage, fascinating Virginia traditional arts demonstrations, unique youngster activities and delicious wine tastings throughout the day. The event also boasts a fishing contest in the many lakes on the property, wholesome food provided by local producers and farmers, and dozens of gifted artists and antique vendors.

Rassawek has a rich history that begs to be shared with the community. The Cherokee cabin, originally built in 1910, the 1900’s Lord Burnham greenhouse and the Sailor cabin, built in 1844, were all rebuilt and restored to amazing accuracy and beauty.

Your Furry Friends are welcome at My Manakin Market, as long as they are leashed and you are willing to clean up after them if they make a mess! Please be sensitive if there are farm animals at the market and have your furry keep their distance…

Rain Policy: The market will be open unless we have thunder storms. If in doubt, check ChiknEGG’s website or call 804-314-9141 for a recorded message.

We are located at 68 Broad Street Road in Manakin-Sabot, just 5 minutes west of downtown Short Pump. For more information and a Google Map, Click Here.
