THE HEYDAY IS COMING!  Join us for our first ever Barnyard Peeps Heyday this Saturday! It may be HOT, but we have some pretty COOL stuff happening at the market this week!  The Peeps will have their own Marque Tent in front of the regular market, so make sure to stop and see them while you're visiting us!  This week, look for delicious corn on the cob, green beans, canary melons, collard greens, beets, peppers (including specialty varieties), tomatillas, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes (slicing, cherries, Romas & CANNING tomatoes), zucchini, a variety of summer squashes, cabbage, potatoes, spring onions, eggplant, peaches, watermelons, fresh & potted herbs and berries. We have a great selection of meats, including grass-fed beef, pastured pork, lamb and poultry. We’ll have cheese this week from Marshall Farms Cheese- come and try a sample! Our selection of baked goods includes breads, muffins, focaccia, pies, quiches and even pizza crusts! We also have honey, candy, homemade spices, jams, jellies, local wines, and lots of other delicious Virginia Grown items available at My Manakin Market! What makes us unique?  We are PRODUCER ONLY and support sustainably raised produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods, and true artisan crafts!  Check out What's In Season now!  Come early for best selection!


We have MOUTH-WATERING Heirloom Tomatoes!
My Manakin Market has some wonderful artisan crafters, so make sure to keep your eyes open for great gifts throughout the season – look for handmade clothing, jewelry, hand-carved wooden objects, wreaths, bedspreads, fiber products, soaps, bath bombs & lotions, pottery, knitted/crocheted items and more. And don’t forget to check out ChiknEGG’s Systern Rain Barrels and Earth Machine Composters!  We have some beautiful cut flowers and plants for sale, too, so make sure to take home a bouquet to brighten up your home or office!

The Richmond SPCA will be joining us with a booth on this Saturday.  They will have general information about the Richmond SPCA and will be selling raffle tickets for the Cinderella Fund, which benefits the sick and injured animals in their care.  The raffle is a fundraising component of the Fur Ball, Richmond's signature event for pets and people, on October1, 2011.

We will also be joined on Saturday by Bon Secours.  Bonnie the Bunnie will be there making lots of children smile, and there will be an info table under the Barnyard Peeps Marqee with information about Breast Feeding, General Health and St. Mary's for Kids!

BARNYARD PEEPS HEYDAY - WOW!  It's really THIS Saturday!!!

My Manakin Market will be presenting its first "Barnyard Peeps Heyday" THIS Saturday! The Barnyard Peeps Heyday is a special day for ages 6-16 where we allow our Peeps to bring products that are homegrown, homemade or handcrafted.  We want to encourage our future farmers and entrepreneurs and give them a venue for their special and unique talents.  Click HERE for details about special Heyday activities and visitors, as well as a list of whose coming and what they'll be bringing. This is a really fun event for kids, so make sure to tell all your friends, co-workers, relatives and schoolmates to come and join in the fun!


MUSIC AT THE MARKET

We have such a treat in store for our market customers this week at the market!  Harper Speagle-Price fronts the bluegrass band Harper & Co. She is thirteen years old and started playing mandolin when she was seven. The band has played the Virginia State Fair, Ashland Coffee and Tea, and the VCU Guitar and Other Strings Series. Harper has appeared on Grete Dolitz’s NPR show “An Hour with the Guitar” and on CBS’s “Virginia This Morning.” For the past two summers, she has attended Tristan and Tashina Clarridge’s Mt. Shasta Music Camp in Mt. Shasta, CA. She is the 2009 and 2010 Fiddler’s Grove Junior Mandolin Champion and a recipient of the Virginia Folk Music Association’s Youth Heritage Award.  To book Harper & Co. for your next event, contact Terry Price.

Kid's - come and see what critters Christopher and Annabelle, our Local Agrarian Critter Corner farmers in training, will have at the market for you to pet and visit with!  Christoper and Annabelle will be happy to show you their farm critters and share their knowledge with young and old(er) market shoppers!  They have a few things for sale that they have made themselves and are donating a portion of their proceeds to charity animal rescue groups!  We are very proud of these young, forward-thinking agrarians!

We're also offering wine tastings from two of our local wineries, Grayhaven Winery and WindSong Winery. Come grab a glass of Sangria or wine and hang-out in the wine corral with some delicious locally sourced prepared foods from Kota's Kabobs or The Local Agrarian.

Barnyard Peeps Heyday - Saturday, July 30th, 2011

Barnyard Peeps Heyday  
on Saturday, July 30th, 2011!


What is the Barnyard Peeps Heyday, anyway? 

The Barnyard Peeps Heyday is a special day for children ages 6-16 where we allow our Peeps to bring products that are homegrown, homemade or handcrafted by the Peeps themselves.  We want to encourage our future farmers and entrepreneurs and give them a venue for their special and unique talents.

Monacan Water and Soil Conservation District Conservation Technician Betty McCracken will be demonstrating how cool our soil is with her cool educational exhibit.  

Bonnie the Bunny, the mascot for Bon Secours HealthSystem, will be joining the Barnyard Peeps, too. She is a giant purple bunny who goes around bringing smiles to children’s faces!

We'll have lots of fun games and special activities for Peeps of all ages, including a fun Farmers Market Scavenger Hunt!

HOT SUMMER SIZZLIN' FUN - OH, YEAH!  Sure, it is blazing hot, but our local farmers and artisans are still working hard to make sure you have lots to eat and unique gifts and goodies to select from!  Summer produce is HERE! MUSIC AT THE MARKET
Ian Hunter Rowland is our musician this Saturday at the market.  He likes to compose his own songs, and has been playing guitar for 7 years.  Along the way, he has picked up bass guitar, drums, violin, mandolin, keyboard, ukelele, didgeridoo, or whatever else he can get his hands on! Ian uses garageband and plays all of his own tracks and puts them together to make arrangements. Enjoy!

Have you had it with the rain yet???  It has done some good for all those great summer crops.  I remember last year at this time when it was so dry the tomatoes were exploding on the vines!  We have a terrific assortment of fresh summer produce.  This week look for corn on the cob, green beans, lettuce, Swiss chard, collard greens, beets, peppers, carrots, cucumbers, TOMATOES (both slicing & cherries), zucchini, summer squash, cabbage, potatoes, onions (a few left) fresh & potted herbs and BERRIES. We have a great selection of meats, including grass-fed beef, pastured pork, lamb and poultry. We’ll have cheese this week from Marshall Farms- come and try a sample! Due to a last minute cancellation, we are working our tail ends off to find substitute musicians for this coming Saturday.  If you, or anyone you know would like to play at the market, please contact Lisa Dearden by email or phone (804-314-9141) to get set-up for this coming Saturday.  Musicians play from 9-noon.  There is some compensation involved!  If you can't play this weekend, but would like to play another time, we'd still love to hear from you!
