My Manakin Market will be holding a once monthly, indoor farmers market from 9:00am-Noon on the first Saturday of each month!
We will be located at 36 Broad Street Road, under the brand new heated indoor patio at Enzo's Italian Chophouse, at the Food Lion Shopping Center in Manakin Sabot, which is adjacent to our regular seasonal market site.  Click HERE for a map to Enzo's.

Chickens and You! The Chicken Have-More Plan Explained
This is the KICK-OFF for this series of courses in Central Virginia!  Inspired by the book called The Have-More Plan:  A Little Land – A Lot of Living by Ed and Carolyn Robinson, author Patricia Foreman  expanded on the role that chickens play in her popular and timely book:  City Chicks:  Keeping Micro-flocks of Chickens as Garden Helpers, Compost Creators, Bio-recyclers and Local Food Suppliers
 
During this  class, we will explore the role chickens play in the following four subjects:
  • Enhancing Backyard Agriculture
  • Diverting Food and Yard “Waste” Out of Landfills
  • Decreasing Oil Consumption and Lowering Carbon Footprints
  • National Defense & Emergency Preparedness
 About the Instructor
Patricia Foreman graduated from Indiana University with a Masters of Public Administration.  She went on to Graduate School and received her BSC both from Indiana, and then from Purdue University, where she majored in Animal Science, Genetics and Nutrition.  She is both an author and licensed pharmacist.

She is the author of City Chicks: Keeping Micro-flocks of Laying Hens as Garden Helpers, Compost Makers, Bio-recyclers and Local food Suppliers.  She is the co-author of Chicken Tractor, Day Range Poultry, Backyard Market Gardening and A Tiny Home to Call Your Own.
  
There will be a question and answer session after the class led by Pat Foreman.

Laying Hens 101
This is a comprehensive introductory course for those who want to keep small flocks of laying hens — beginning with adult birds. You will learn the most important considerations in caring for a flock in a limited space. Includes hen anatomy and physiology, behavior, handling, health, nutrition, egg management, and housing basics. This interactive, highly-participatory workshop also covers which chicken breeds tend to do best in the Central Virginia climate. All questions will be answered and you will leave the course with the knowledge you need to know about successfully keeping chickens in your backyard. Space is limited.

Starting from Scratch with Baby Chicks
Learn the most important factors in caring for baby chicks, including chick anatomy and physiology, behavior, health, nutrition and housing. This interactive lecture based workshop also covers a wide variety of chicken breeds. All questions will be answered and you will leave the course with everything you need to know to raise baby chicks successfully. Space is limited.

Time: 1:00-2:30pmHens Right
Cost: $25 per class, or $60 for all three classes on the 28th

Gardening With Chickens
Chickens have skill sets that can be gainfully employed in backyard gardens. This interactive discussion will give you practical and effective cutting-edge ways to integrate chickens in with your yard and garden. Topics include types of fencing (what works and what doesn’t), when to let birds in and when to keep them out of specific crops life cycles, bird-scaping, and, best of all, getting wholesome, home-grown food for both you, and your flock. This will truly be a “Think Outside the Coop“ workshop. Space is limited.

Time: 3:00-5:30pmGarden Chicken
Cost: $25 per class, or $60 for all three classes on the 28th

The Greatest Little
Neighborhood in Richmond
features a
Great Little Holiday Parade!
“Christmas on MacArthur” will take place from noon-4:00 p.m. on December 10, 2011, in the 4000 Block of MacArthur Avenue, Richmond.

The Bellevue Neighborhood’s annual “Christmas on MacArthur” festivities kick off at noon with a parade featuring the Holton Elementary School Choir, the John Marshall High Marching Band, the Huguenot High Drum Line, the Richmond Corvette Club, Fireweed Farm alpacas and more!
After the one-block parade, you can shop inside Samis Grotto (next door to Dot’s Back Inn) for unique gifts made by more than 30 local artists and craft vendors, or feed the alpacas outside the craft show. There will be pictures with Santa, and if you bring a toy to donate to Toys for Tots, you can register to win a new bike.

Music at the Market
Saturday:  Noon - 2:00pm  A fixture in the Richmond area, Wayne Ruotolo has performed his mix of acoustic, folk rock for many years. By drawing on an extensive song list that encompasses over four decades of rock, pop, folk and country, he is able to crisscross multi-generational audiences with ease. A singer/songwriter, he also has a sizable collection of original songs comprised of everyday life narratives and poetic ballads. Wayne Ruotolo's first exposure to a Richmond audience was at the Cock & Bull in Richmond's Northside opening for Page Wilson. As an English major at the Virginia Commonwealth University, he began to explore the possibility of a career in music. Throughout the eighties and early nineties, he played at many colleges and universities in Virginia. Sunday: Noon – 2:00pm  Workman and Wife – “A husband and wife duo, Joe and Becky Workman play tunes to fit the occasion or venue.  Typical sets include: music from the 20s/30s/40s; classic country/lite bluegrass; folk and folk originals; and even an occasional 70s tune.  We create customized “geo-sets” for such themes as Italian, Mexican and Hawaiian - making Workman and Wife perfect for events, parties or restaurants/bars.” Contact Joe to book Workman and Wife for your next special occasion or party @ (804) 382-6501.

We are located behind Essex Bank, just five minutes west of Short Pump at 68 Broad Street in Manakin-Sabot.  We will be open Saturday, December 3rd from 10:00am-4:00pm, and on Sunday, December 4th from Noon-4:00pm. For directions and a map, click HERE

Because of the Christmas tree lot being right in front of our marquee, we ask that you park in the field next to the market site.  Please do not park on the street.  If you need assistance with parking, please ask one of our volunteers to help you!
