Naked Alpacas at the Market!

My Manakin Market - May 19th, 2012

JOIN US FOR OUR "LET'S GET NAKED" MINI-FIBER FESTIVAL!

Download a Flyer to Share HERE!
Join us for a fun-filled morning packed with learning how we harvest the fleece from alpacas (shearing) to the final step of creating clothing and household goods - and all of the steps in between.  Start to Finish! We will have a FREE kids activity to make and take home-yarn dolls, too.  We'll also have a live Chef's Demo!

We have LOTS of fresh seasonal produce, meats, baked goods, local wines, honey, candy, artisan crafts, candles, fresh-cut flowers, plants (including vegetable starts), hanging baskets, Japanese Maples, and MORE!  The market also offers LIVE baby chicks and ducks!  Come prepared to take home your little birds with a box or cage of some kind.  COME HUNGRY - we will have HOT, ready to eat prepared breakfast and lunch for your culinary pleasure, courtesy of The Local Agrarian and Piedmont Smokehouse.  Come grab breakfast or lunch and sit a spell under the shade while you chow down in-between shopping spurts!  To see a map of the market, Click HERE.

CHEF AT THE MARKET
Download a HOUSE CALLS Brochure!
Personal Chef Carolyn Hughes of HOUSE CALLS will be doing a Live Chef's Demo at 10:00 and 11:30am this week. Chef Carolyn, who does Full Service Personal Meals, Corporate Events and Parties for 200-200 people, will be cooking up some Simple Summer Hors d'uerves.  She'll be providing hand-outs with menus, instructions and lots of tips, too!  Come watch and learn as Chef Carolyn prepares unique food with an emphasis on taste, quality and presentation.

MORE ABOUT OUR FIBER FESTIVAL
Clotho's Handspinners will be weaving!
This Week's Kid's Activity!
Join local alpaca guru Teri Phipps of Fireweed Alpacas as she does a live demonstration of shearing at the market, with help from Carol Mericle of Rockville Alpaca Farm.  Linda Pollak and Hank Boyd will be skirting (cleaning) the fleeces), Wendy Fleming of Hermes Alpacas will be carding the fleece, and the good folks from Clotho's Handspinners will be weaving the fiber into yarn!  Come visit with these beautiful, friendly animals. This is an opportunity for customers to learn about the basics of fiber harvesting, cleaning, and spinning while having a fun time with hands-on and visual demonstrations. We will have baby alpacas with us, so stop by to visit, pet and feed them!

MUSIC AT THE MARKET

We have such a treat in store for our market customers this week at the market!  Harper Speagle-Price fronts the bluegrass band Harper & Co. She is fourteen years old and started playing mandolin when she was seven. The band has played the Virginia State Fair, Ashland Coffee and Tea, and the VCU Guitar and Other Strings Series. Harper has appeared on Grete Dolitz’s NPR show “An Hour with the Guitar” and on CBS’s “Virginia This Morning.” For the past two summers, she has attended Tristan and Tashina Clarridge’s Mt. Shasta Music Camp in Mt. Shasta, CA. She is the 2009 and 2010 Fiddler’s Grove Junior Mandolin Champion and a recipient of the Virginia Folk Music Association’s Youth Heritage Award.  To book Harper & Co. for your next event, contact Terry Price.

CRITTER CORNER
Kid's - come and see what critters Christopher and Annabelle, our Local Agrarian Critter Corner farmers in training, will have at the market for you to pet and visit with!  Christoper and Annabelle will be happy to show you their farm critters and share their knowledge with young and old(er) market shoppers!  They have a few things for sale that they have made themselves and are donating a portion of their proceeds to charity animal rescue groups!  We are very proud of these young, forward-thinking agrarians!

Join our Club Sprouts!
We have live music every week, cooking demonstrations, chef's demos, regular children's activities and lots of other fun activities for the whole family. Kids can join our Marketeers Club and join our vendors to sell what they have grown or made themselves, or join our Club Sprouts to try new farm fresh foods for rewards!  Contact ChiknEGG’s Special Events Coordinator, Beth Hopkins for more information on our children's activities.
